For the Baby Orphanages age birth to 5 yrs, they need things like diapers, rattles, baby toys, dolls, action figures, baby/toddler clothes, blankets.

The other orphanages need clothing of all sizes and shoes, also warm winter coats, hats, scarves, and gloves. Blankets, personal care items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, underwear, socks, and bras are also needed. Toys for the older ones including basketballs and soccer balls (those are the only real sports) but along with that, things like Frisbees and other lawn toys. Puzzles and chess/checkers would also be nice.

The transitional care program needs household items to set the teens up in housing such as dishes, glassware, silverware, pots and pans, towels etc…  These teens also are learning life skills, and so hand tools (not electric) such as screwdrivers and wrenches etc… will help with that area.

There are also institutions for the elderly. With no social security and the younger generation leaving the country and their children, there is no one to care for the elderly.  They have a great need of adult diapers and blankets.

He spoke of the great need for not only medical supplies and equipment, but also for basic necessities for care of the elderly, the orphans of all ages and for the orphans who age out of the orphanage and are asked to leave, with no home, no job skills and sadly no hope.

Hands of Hope NW is working on a container of medical equipment for the hospitals there, and some caring people at a local church and other individuals, are working on putting together a container of the other needed new or used (but usable) items.

Twice a month quilting volunteers gather and make four quilts (eight per month) to be given to The Salvation Army Homeless Shelter and Valley Crisis Shelter for abused women and children.  Residents use the quilts while there and take them when they move to another location.

The Hands of Hope label is sewn onto the back of the quilt in order to spread “Comfort and Hope”.

We have been making quilts for nine years with the help of about a dozen volunteers.  More than 873 quilts have been made in that 9 years.

All material for quilt tops is donated.  Volunteers buy eight single bed sheets monthly, which become the backing for the quilts.  Given the average cost of quilts (around 75.00 per quilt) the ministry has donated over $65,000.00 in quilt value to local women and children in need.

In Nigeria, West Africa, it is said, “Ora na azu nwa,” or “It takes a village to raise a child.” At Hands of Hope Northwest we see that, “It takes many people to reach the lost.” It takes donors of equipment and supplies, volunteers who spend hours sorting and repacking supplies, those who repair broken wheelchairs, walkers, and crutches, doctors, pastors, and laypersons who are willing to go to the remote villages, and team members who are willing to financially support this incredible ministry. You see, it is not just about being an organization concerned with feeding the hungry, providing medical equipment, or clothing those who are without, but it is that we keep the Great Commission as “The Mission.” Touching the lives of those around us locally (with the local loan program) and globally (through our medical shipments) in the matchless name of Jesus Christ.

Volunteering can take many forms, from sorting equipment and supplies in the warehouse, to answering phones in the office and checking out local loan equipment.  Chandra used her talent to bless others who in turn are using their talents to pack and ship the medical equipment and supplies abroad.  What talents do you have that you could use to bless others both here and abroad?

Computer programming, sorting, shipping, answering phones, computer entry, cleaning, quilting, this is just a short list of the many areas available for you to volunteer your time and talents.
